Overview

Every tissue and organ in the body is built from cells, the smallest living units of life. Understanding basic cell structure is the foundation on which all of anatomy and physiology rests, because the behavior of organs ultimately reflects the activity of their cells.

The Cell Membrane

The cell is enclosed by a thin plasma membrane made of a double layer of lipids studded with proteins. It is selectively permeable, controlling what enters and leaves the cell and allowing it to communicate with its surroundings.

The Nucleus

The nucleus is the control center. It holds the cell's DNA, the genetic blueprint that directs the production of proteins and governs cell division. A nuclear envelope separates it from the rest of the cell.

Key Organelles

Floating in the gel-like cytoplasm are specialized structures:

  • Mitochondria: The "powerhouses" that produce energy (ATP).
  • Endoplasmic reticulum: A network for making proteins (rough ER) and lipids (smooth ER).
  • Golgi apparatus: Packages and ships proteins to their destinations.
  • Ribosomes: The sites where proteins are assembled.
  • Lysosomes: Containers of enzymes that break down waste.

Why It Matters for Anatomy

Different cell types specialize for different jobs: muscle cells are packed with contractile proteins, nerve cells have long projections for signaling, and gland cells are rich in the machinery for secretion. Anatomy at every level reflects this cellular specialization.

Summary

The cell, with its membrane, nucleus, and organelles, is the basic unit of the body. Its structure determines its function, and the specialization of cells gives rise to the tissues and organs studied throughout anatomy.
