The Shoulder Joint: Mobility at the Cost of Stability

Overview
The shoulder, or glenohumeral joint, is the most mobile joint in the human body. It is a ball-and-socket joint between the head of the humerus and the shallow glenoid cavity of the scapula. This freedom of movement comes at a price: stability.
A Shallow Socket
The glenoid cavity is small and flat compared with the large humeral head — often likened to a golf ball resting on a tee. A rim of cartilage called the glenoid labrum deepens it slightly, but most stability comes from the surrounding soft tissues rather than the bone.
The Rotator Cuff
Four muscles form the rotator cuff, blending into the joint capsule and actively holding the humeral head against the glenoid:
- Supraspinatus – initiates abduction.
- Infraspinatus – external rotation.
- Teres minor – external rotation.
- Subscapularis – internal rotation.
A useful mnemonic for these four is "SITS."
Movements
The shoulder allows flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, and circumduction — the widest range of any joint.
Clinical Significance
Because the socket is shallow, the shoulder is the most commonly dislocated major joint, usually anteriorly. Rotator cuff tears, especially of the supraspinatus, are a frequent cause of shoulder pain and weakness.
Summary
The shoulder trades bony stability for unmatched mobility, relying on the rotator cuff and labrum to stay in place. This design explains both its versatility and its vulnerability to injury.
