The Hip Joint: A Stable Ball-and-Socket

Overview

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint between the head of the femur and the cup-shaped acetabulum of the pelvis. Unlike the shoulder, it sacrifices some range of motion in exchange for the stability required to support body weight during standing and walking.

Bony Architecture

The deep acetabulum grips the femoral head far more than the shallow shoulder socket grips the humerus. A rim of fibrocartilage, the labrum, deepens the socket further and improves the seal around the head.

Ligaments

Three strong ligaments reinforce the capsule:

  • Iliofemoral ligament: The strongest ligament in the body; prevents over-extension.
  • Pubofemoral ligament: Limits excessive abduction.
  • Ischiofemoral ligament: Restricts internal rotation.

Together they wind around the joint and tighten as the hip extends, helping us stand with little muscular effort.

Movements

The hip allows flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, and circumduction — a wide but controlled range.

Clinical Significance

Because of the femoral head's blood supply, hip dislocations and femoral neck fractures are orthopedic emergencies. Osteoarthritis of the hip is a common cause of pain and stiffness and is a leading reason for joint replacement surgery.

Summary

The hip joint is built for weight-bearing stability: a deep socket, a reinforcing labrum, and powerful ligaments combine to keep the joint secure while still allowing a useful range of motion.
