Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands: Anatomy and Function

Overview
The thyroid and parathyroid glands are endocrine glands in the front of the neck. Though they sit side by side, they control very different processes: the thyroid governs metabolism, while the parathyroids regulate calcium.
The Thyroid Gland
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland wrapped around the front of the trachea, just below the larynx. Its two lobes are joined by a central bridge called the isthmus. It produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which set the body's metabolic rate, influencing heart rate, temperature, and energy use. It also produces calcitonin, which helps lower blood calcium.
The Parathyroid Glands
Usually four small glands sit on the back of the thyroid. They secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), the main regulator of blood calcium. When calcium falls, PTH raises it by acting on bone, kidney, and intestine; when calcium rises, PTH secretion drops.
Why Location Matters
Both glands lie close to important structures, including the nerves that control the vocal cords. This makes their precise anatomy critical during neck surgery, where unintended damage can affect the voice or calcium balance.
Clinical Significance
An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) speeds metabolism, while an underactive one (hypothyroidism) slows it. Disorders of the parathyroids disturb calcium levels, which can affect bones, nerves, and muscles.
Summary
The thyroid sets metabolic pace and the parathyroids guard calcium balance. Their shared location in the neck links them anatomically even though their functions are distinct.
