The Aorta: The Body's Main Artery

Overview
The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It begins at the left ventricle and forms the central trunk of the systemic circulation, giving off branches that ultimately supply every organ and tissue with oxygenated blood.
The Course of the Aorta
The aorta is divided into regions based on its path:
- Ascending aorta: Rises from the left ventricle; its first branches are the coronary arteries that feed the heart itself.
- Aortic arch: Curves over the heart and gives off three large branches to the head, neck, and arms.
- Descending thoracic aorta: Travels down through the chest, supplying the chest wall and organs.
- Abdominal aorta: Continues below the diaphragm, supplying the abdominal organs before dividing into the arteries of the legs.
Major Branches of the Arch
The aortic arch gives rise to three vessels:
- Brachiocephalic trunk (which splits into the right common carotid and right subclavian).
- Left common carotid artery.
- Left subclavian artery.
These carry blood to the brain, face, and upper limbs.
Clinical Significance
The wall of the aorta is under high pressure. A weakened, bulging segment is called an aneurysm, which can be life-threatening if it ruptures. A tear within the wall layers, an aortic dissection, is a surgical emergency.
Summary
The aorta is the great highway of the circulation, branching in an orderly sequence from the heart outward. Its high-pressure wall makes both aneurysm and dissection important clinical concerns.
