Overview

The stomach is a muscular, J-shaped organ in the upper left abdomen that connects the esophagus to the small intestine. It serves as both a storage reservoir and a mixing chamber that begins protein digestion.

Regions of the Stomach

  • Cardia: The entry zone where the esophagus joins the stomach.
  • Fundus: The dome-shaped upper region that often traps swallowed air.
  • Body: The large central portion where most mixing occurs.
  • Pylorus: The funnel-shaped outlet, ending in the pyloric sphincter that controls emptying into the duodenum.

The Stomach Wall

The wall has an extra, third muscle layer compared with the rest of the gut, giving it three smooth-muscle orientations. This allows powerful churning that mechanically breaks food into a semi-liquid mixture called chyme. The inner lining is thrown into folds called rugae that flatten as the stomach fills.

Chemical Digestion

Specialized cells in the lining secrete:

  • Hydrochloric acid, which creates the acidic environment and kills many microbes.
  • Pepsinogen, which becomes the enzyme pepsin to begin breaking down proteins.
  • Mucus, which protects the stomach lining from its own acid.

Clinical Significance

When the protective mucus barrier fails, acid can damage the wall and cause peptic ulcers. Reflux of acid into the esophagus produces the familiar symptom of heartburn.

Summary

The stomach stores, churns, and chemically primes food. Its regional anatomy, triple muscle layer, and acid-secreting lining work together to turn a meal into chyme ready for the small intestine.
